Let there be light and there was form

And the potters, weavers, craftsmen, smithies, tailors, carpenters and glass-blowers came; they were drawn to the light, and the ambiance, and they gathered here for inspiration and a desire to learn.

The special light of Ystad and Österlen is frequently compared to the light of Provence and Skagen; so it is easy to understand why many of Sweden’s foremost artists and designers move to Österlen and are inspired by the energy in the light.

There are galleries, artist’s studios and workshops everywhere. You’ll find them in the outlying villages as well as in the centre of town. Many open their doors to visitors so you can buy direct.

Craftsmen at Per Helsa

The Ystad craftsmen represent a kaleido-scope of professional skills, materials and techniques. Many exhibit their works in the old, half-timbered buildings of Per Helsas gård.

Textiles and leather

In Ystad you can find a number of textile designers that work with knitted materials, suede, linen and wool. They produce household goods and art for public buildings as well as unique garments based on old designs from Skåne and modern leather goods.

Potters

Potters have long been practicing their art in Skåne. Pots have been thrown and fired here since time immemorial. The pottery museum in Ystad exhibits pottery from the 1950s and onwards.

Besides producing attractive house-hold pottery, local potters also produce imaginative and exciting sculptures and other works. Some potters encourage visitors to have ago, a skill that is far more difficult than first appears.

Pewter, silver, enamel and glass

Creating household items, jewellery and other objects d’art in metal, glass and plastic is really a skill. In and around Ystad there are many craftsmen that work successfully with these materials.

A traditional local trade is the work of the silversmith; their workshops can still be found in the small side streets.

Stone and wood

Sensual sculptures in marble can hardly be called household items, but they can certainly be an exciting feature in the garden or home.

Traditional craftsmen and furniture designers are complemented by manufacturers that work with wood and create all manner of things including bent-wood furniture and exclusive interiors.
