The Art Museum

Wow, an art museum in rural Ystad -  in the centre of Europe!

Once upon a time there was a group of enthusiasts who decided to start a collection for an art work to be placed in the centre of town. And when they had finished and Bäckahästen was unveiled they decided to continue with this good work and establish an art museum, and in 1936, Ystads konst-museum (Ystad Art Museum) was opened.

The sculpture Today, new enthusiasts have continued with the good work. From the very beginning it was hoped that the national museum would provide works and today the museum boasts an important collection of Swedish and Danish 20th century art including loans, donations and purchases. There are new 21st century works too.

The exhibition includes works by Ola Billgren, C O Hultén, Ludvig Karsten, Peter Lergaard, Minako Masui, Bengt Orup, Greta Sandberg, Lisa Strömbeck, Charlotte Wallentin, Gerhard Wihlborg, Lisa Jeannin and John Wipp. The special photo gallery has a unique collection of photographs including a Daguerreotype from 1845.
The enormous variety in this year’s temporary exhibi-tions is impressive; visitors can see paintings by Karin Mamma Andersson, Astrid Svangren and Viktor Kopp.  There will also be an exhibition of works by various artists at Tänd Mörkret (Light the dark) - Swedish art 1975-85. Other events include concerts and happe-nings – an appreciated aspect of the museum’s deter-mination to be alive.

The museum and the Tourist Office have all the dates and times.

A bookshop in the art museum café sells local art works, new publications, catalo-gues and posters from Ystad and other galleries. Visitors can also find an almost unique collection of the Swedish Artist Books, SAAB, from the 1940s until today.
